Teen Boy Bedroom Makeover Plans (2024)

Plans for a vintage modern style Teen Boy Bedroom Makeover for the One Room Challengeincluding sources.

How I’m going to create a cozy teen boy bedroom decorated in green, grey, black, and warm leather tones.

Hello, and welcome back to my One Room Challenge – Week Two! I’ve just started a big project where we will be giving our oldest son’s bedroom a complete makeover in the next (now) 7 weeks time!

If you’re not familiar with the One Room Challenge (hereafter I’ll call it the ORC), I’ll bring you up-to-date. It’s a 8-week long challenge in which decorators, designers, and homeowners pick a space in their home to completely update. There are feature designers for each session, as well as many guest participants (like myself) who join in each week. You can read more about this event here.

I’ve done the One Room Challenge a few times in the past, and I love how the challenge pushes your limits as a decorator and homeowner. And… it forces you to set really specific makeover goals and get things done in a timely manner! Making decisions can be hard for me at times, so I love how the challenge time limit makes me get on track and compete a room.

Last week I shared the before pictures and a few of my initial ideas for making over Leif’s bedroom. You can see more of his room “BEFORE” in this article.

I also discussed some of my initial ideas for this makeover:

What is the plan for this teen boy bedroom makeover?

  • new paint colour
  • maybe wall trim/moulding?
  • probably wallpaper or a wall mural
  • new, cozier rug
  • some new bedding or decorative pillows to mix up what he has
  • art!
  • displaying favourite accessories
  • possibly a new bookcase
  • maybe removing or changing up the chair
  • What will stay in this teen boy bedroom?

Things that probably will stay (though I guess nothing is truly safe at this point):

  • the bed
  • the nightstands
  • the dresser
  • the desk

Well, this week my sister-in-law popped by and we got to talking about Leif’s room. She helped me move his furniture around to see how we might setup his room in other ways, and we ended up settling on a few major changes in layout, which I hadn’t been expecting.

His bed is now setup under his window, and his dresser has been moved inside his closet. We also removed the big white chair and I am storing it away for a future project.

In discussion with her and with my ‘client’, Leif, it was also decided that the bookcases are going to be sold and a more “teenage” feeling wood and metal etagere shelf will take their place. The desk may also be changed up for a wood and metal desk that is a little bit wider, now that the dresser is in the closet and there is more space for the desk. I’m going to hold off on my decision about the desk until I’ve got more of the other elements setup in the room.

I spent A LOT of time this week planning this makeover, and I think I’m pretty settled on the following plans, but have two options…

Option 1 – Keeping the current desk

OR

Option TWO, selling and replacing the current desk, different chair:

Overall, I think the pieces will work together either way. Replacing the current desk just means that he will have more work space, which he kind of needs because he tends to spread out (all over my kitchen island, normally!).

This teen boy bedroom makeover has got a modern / vintage mix that I just love, as well as a good mix of warm and cool tones.

So… the plan is to:

  1. Install this wallpaper mural from Photowall on the large wall where his bed used to sit.
  2. Paint the bottom half of the walls dark green. I will likely wait into choose my final colour once the mural arrives, but something along the lines of Benjamin Moore’s Essex Green, as shown above. The trim and upper half of the walls will stay Chantilly Lace, as they currently are.
  3. Paint his current nightstands black, and get him some new lamps that have more of a vintage modern feel.
  4. Sell his three ladder style bookcases and purchase an metal etagere style bookshelf instead. It will likely go on the wall where his dresser and desk used to be.
  5. Setup a reading corner beside the photo mural wall and order a warm, light saddle brown faux leather chair. I’m choosing between two styles right now – one works better with his current desk, while the other suits the wood/metal desk. We will probably keep the floor lamp you saw in his ‘before’ pictures but I’ll see once the other elements are in the space.
  6. Possibly sell his Lommarp desk and order a desk that is larger with a mix of wood and metal.
  7. Create a desk area on the wall where his ladder bookcases used to be, with a large vintage style world map hung above the desk. I’ll also order him a new rolling chair to use at his desk in a brown faux leather finish.
  8. Bring in a new super cozy rug in off-white and charcoal grey.
  9. Add in accessories that reinforce the scheme of grey, black, brown, green and white.
