Salt and Pepper Wings (2023)

Salt and Pepper Wings might sound rather plain and boring, but how can you go wrong with the two most common seasonings in any cook’s pantry? These wings can be served just like they are or with a side dipping sauce. Furthermore, they can be tossed in a sauce too!

I can’t believe these words are about to spew from my mouth, but here goes… Not everything in life has to be fancy! (Oh Lord, the Charlotte York who livesinside me is spittingout the bitter taste that those words has leftinher mouth! She’s running around her kitchen in her Prada’s shrieking in disgust and disbelief!) Those who know me really well, will completely understand. Nancy Fuller says that simple is best, and in the case of these Salt and Pepper Wings, I couldn’t agree more!

Maybe I should have thought long and hard about speaking such vulgarity. Fancy is everything! I would be lying to you and to myself if I said anything differently. But, that’s not really true. It’s been said before that I have champagne tastes on a beer budget. At the time, I was completely appalled by such a comment. But, now, in my wiser years, I’m very grateful that I can pull together something delicious or something pretty, without breaking the bank.

In fact, Dear Reader, I’ll come clean with you. I’m a plain soul; one who is extremely domesticated and very comfortable with being at home. But, even though more days than not, it’s just me and John.e that ever sees the inside of our home, I try my best to keep it looking clean and ‘fancy.”

INGREDIENTS NEEDED TO PREPARE THIS RECIPE

The following is a list of the ingredients needed to prepare this recipe. For exact amounts and measurements, refer to the printable recipe card located near the bottom of this post.

  • Chicken Wings– This recipe is for 2 pounds of chicken wings. That should yield about 10-12 wings per pound. If you have whole wings, cut them so that the drumette and wingette are separate. I discarded the wing tip.
  • Ground Black Pepper & Salt
  • Olive Oil

HOW TO MAKE SALT AND PEPPER WINGS

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper. Set that aside. Place the wings into a large bowl, add the salt, ground black pepper, and olive oil. Using tongs, coat the wings.

Lay the wings out in a single layer on the baking sheet. Bake for 30 minutes. Remove the wings from the oven, turn each wing, and bake once again for an additional 20 minutes.

Serve with celery sticks and your favourite prepared ranch dipping sauce.

FANCY DOESN’T COST A THING

Fancy doesn’t need to cost money. I think one can shop at a dollar store and find little treasures to make a home look good. I don’t often go to dollar stores, mostly because there’s not a good one that’s close to where we live, but I do often shop for decor at Walmart, Michael’s, Ikea, Hobby Lobby, HomeSense, etc. It’s all about the hunt and knowing that will look good in your home and pair well with the pieces you already have.

When it comes to kitchenware though, I tend to spend a little more. For the home cook that cooks because they have to put food on the table, average is good enough. But, over the past few years, I have learned that spending a few extra dollars really does mean better quality. The old expression – you get what you pay for – sometimes really does apply!

If you love cooking and baking as much as I do, there’s one thing that I would highly recommend you invest in for yourself. It has be to a good knife or two. And, when it comes to knives, nothing beats Wusthof Classic! I really do believe that quality utensils and tools, and baking and cooking vessels, help to make for a better cooking experience. But, please don’t run out a buy expensive kitchenware. Lord Byron’s Kitchen will always be a recipe source for everyone, not just the rich who can buy expensive cookware!

SIMPLE THINGS CAN MAKE A MEAL EXTRAORDINARY

The pictures you see of the food and décor on my blog is not just a gussied up photo for the purposes of appealing to readers. If I am preparing the simplest of dinners for just the two of us, good forks are used, I choose plates to accent the food, and even when we eat sitting in front of the television, cutlery matches, as does napkins, and garnish accompanies almost every single dish. And to have matching plates and utensils doesn’t cost any more than mismatched, unless that’s the look you’re going for. But, that’s a totally different blog post. 🙂

So, simple is best. Even a recipe as simple as these Salt and Pepper Wings deserved to have the basket lined with the checkered paper insert, and the accompanying veggie sticks with theranch dipping sauce. You don’t need to overdo it like I do, but sometimes, taking a moment or two to make your meal looking extra special, even if that is just a simple sprinkling of dried parsley – which is in almost every pantry! After all, you deserve nothing but the best!

FEELING FANCY??

If you really want to jazz these up a little, I would suggest placing them all out on a big serving platter, and sitting hte platter in the center of your dining room table. Surround the platter with more celery sticks and maybe some carrots sticks too. And place small ramekins randomly around the platter with different types of store-bought dipping sauce.

Try a good BBQ sauce, or a ranch or blue cheese dip. You could use a garlic aioli, or a good honey mustard. There’s always the good old faithful honey garlic sauce, as well as any type of sweet chili Thai dipping sauce. The possibilities are endless, so enjoy the simplicity, Dear Reader, and make everything fancy to suit your own tastes!

My all-time favourite ingredient combination, which is garlic and honey, are the dominant flavours in these Honey Garlic Turkey Wings. If you ever feel like there’s not enough meat on a chicken wing, give turkey wings a try! They are super moist and more filling too!!

Breaded Chicken Wings

Forget those Breaded Chicken Wings in the frozen section of your local grocery store! This homemade version has better flavour, more crunch, and most certainly way more bang for your buck. These are great just the way they are, or toss them in your favourite wing sauce!

Japanese Chicken Wings

Japanese Chicken Wings are baked with a light and crispy coating in an Asian-inspired sauce prepared with soy sauce, vinegar, and sugar. They are super moist and tender on the inside with a golden crispy skin on the outside. It’s hard to share these wings, because they’re just so delicious!
