1,600 MidAmerican customers without power Wednesday afternoon (2024)

UPDATE: MidAmerican Energy has multiple crews working in each of the damage areas throughout the day and they made excellent progress in all areas, with only 1,600 customers out as of 4 p.m. Wednesday, according to a news release update.

“It remains important to note that in the areas with the most damage, even as MidAmerican restores its facilities, customers’ properties may have sustained damage at a level that will not allow them to receive service,” the update says. “We have dedicated crews and dispatchers focused solely on requests to reconnect customer services as customers are able to safely receive electric service.”

MidAmerican will continue to provide updates.

EARLIER UPDATE: MidAmerican crews have been working since the Tuesday morning storm hit to bring the total number of customers out down from the peak of 19,900.

As of 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, an estimated 5,400 customers remain without power on the Illinois side of the Quad Cities, according to a news release. “Unfortunately, the remaining customers out are in areas that experienced extensive damage and where the terrain is especially challenging. More than 100 power poles were damaged and will have to be replaced,” the release says.

“While our crews remain in full force – we have a fresh set of crews starting work at 11 p.m. tonight – the restoration in these areas is going to take some time – in excess of 48 hours for some customers. By tomorrow morning, we expect to have more specific information on estimated time of restoration (ETRs) by area. But in the meantime, we want to help our customers understand what to expect,” says the release.

“Fortunately, the storms that were forecast to hit other areas didn’t cause widespread outages. If those conditions remain, that will free up more crews to dedicate to restoration in the Quad Cities,” according to the release. “Rest assured, our crews will work around the clock to restore customers as quickly and as safely as they can. We will be on site working 24/7 until every last customer is restored.”

“We so appreciate our customers’ patience as our crews work diligently to restore their power,” the release says.

MidAmerican urges customers to assume that any downed line is energized and not to touch it. To report an electrical emergency, call 800-799-4443.

EARLIER UPDATE: As of 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, about 14,000 of its Illinois customers are without power, according to MidAmerican Energy’s update.

About 300 people, including line crews, tree crews and support personnel, are working on restoration efforts in the Quad Cities or are enroute to assist, the update says.

“This morning severe thunderstorm’s impact to our system occurred primarily east of the Mississippi River, at its peak interrupting service to nearly 20,000 Illinois customers around 9:30 this morning,” the update says. Crews since have restored about 5,000 customers.

“While we don’t have estimated restoration times for individual customers, we expect to restore thousands over the next several hours, and our efforts will continue around the clock,” the update says. “We continue to assess system damage, which is needed before we can determine estimated restoration times for individual customers.”

“Additionally, we are preparing for the potential for a severe weather outbreak that threatens central and eastern Iowa, and western Illinois, including the same Quad Cities area that was impacted this morning.

MidAmerican encourages customers without power to report the outage to MidAmerican here, because customers may experience long wait times on the phone from the high volume of calls, the update says.

MidAmerican urges customers to assume that any downed line is energized, and not to touch it, the update says. For electrical emergencies only, including to report a downed line, call 800-799-4443.
